Perhaps one of the more popular jobs in the health care careers field today is that of a medical transcriptionist. There are reasons why. Work schedule flexibility is a primary concern with many people. Working as a medical transcriptionist can provide that along with excellent benefits packages and first-rate compensation.

Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by doctors and other health care  professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. Generally medical transcriptionists listen to recordings using a head set and type the information into a word processor, editing and correcting as necessary. Among others the documents they produce include discharge summaries, medical history and physical examination reports. The health care professionals that dictated them then review these reports; corrections made and are prepared for signature. These then become part of a patient’s personal medical history. Medical dictation is not an exact science and to understand and accurately transcribe dictated reports, medical transcriptionists must understand medical terminology. They also must be able to translate medical terminology and abbreviations into their expanded forms. To help identify terms appropriately, transcriptionists will refer to standard medical reference materials , both printed and electronic. Keeping patient information confidential is imperative and  medical transcriptionists must comply with specific standards that apply to the style of medical records they produce.

The more experienced transcriptionists spot errors or inconsistencies in a medical report and check to correct the information. Their ability to understand and correctly transcribe patient assessments and treatments reduces the chance of patients receiving ineffective or even harmful treatments and ensures high-quality patient care.
